So many words could be used to describe a person as important to The Grateful Dead without actually playing in the band on stage, but those words would never reach the descriptive nature of the poet himself, Robert Hunter. Today marks the 71st birthday of the legendary song writer who raised the bar in painting the musical picture through lyrics for the Dead.
You know it’s a pretty damn good resume if his first credited work for the band was writing the first verse to Dark Star in 1967 followed up by fan favorites St. Stephen, Scarelet Begonias, Terrapin Station, Friend of The Devil, Box of Rain, Truckin’, and many more. If you asked a Grateful Dead fan their favorite Robert Hunter piece, you’d get a hundred different answers. It wasn’t just about the music of The Grateful Dead, but the lyrics and stories within the music. And for that, lets wish Robert Hunter a Happy 71st birthday.
