MP3 OF THE DAY: Phriday The 13th with Phish in 1992

During Phish’s 1992 Spring Tour the band stopped at the Campus Club in Providence, RI to perform on the creepy Friday The 13th in March. And what better way to turn a labeled “dark day” into a bright one with the boys who were still establishing themselves into a “must see” band.

The show launches you right into evening with a fiery opener of The Curtain > Spilt Open and Melt. Next, Poor Heart > Guelah Papyrus which gives a nod to Phish’s recent release (at the time) of their first major label release Picture of Nectar on Elektra Records.

The band then rips into Maze, Dinner and a Movie > Divided Sky where a fan screams POSSUM! in the break point of Divided. Mound > Fluffhead featuring a Follow The Yellow Brick Road ending sets up the boys to rock out a monster set one closer of Run Like an Antelope > Big Black Furry Creature From Mars > Run Like an Antelope sandwhich containing more Yellow Brick Road teases, Mike (Gordon) teasing Groove is in The Heart, and a Simpsons signal to close it.

Set two opens with a Wilson featuring a Somewhere Over The Rainbow tease, Brother, Horse > Silent in The Morning, a solid Landlady > Lizards, My Mind’s Got a Mind of its Own, The Sloth, Rift, Cold as Ice > Love You > Cold as Ice, and with so much Secret Language stuff going on thoughout the show, the boys bust out Possum > into the Secret Language Instructions breakdown informing fans of what all these signals and notes are instructing them to do at the live show > Possum with more Secret Language material.

Thy encore with the first known performance of Mike on accordion for Contact followed up by the Hendrix cover of Fire. This show is a lot of fun and would even get Jason Voorhees to get down and boogie on his beloved holiday. Feel free to pass this along to others and share in the groove on a special Friday the 13th taking place twenty years ago!
