MP3 of The Day: Ten Bob Marley Jam Covers

Alright, we did the authentic Bob Marley birthday celebration with selecting the ten best videos on the web. Now it’s time to offer you ten jam covers of Marley and remind you of why you love Endless Boundaries Jam Radio. And yes, all sound boards so a disclaimer and spoiler alert: no Phish, Grateful Dead, or popular Marley covers. Just hand picked legal selections from Archive.org and artist websites.

Up first, a show I got to see first hand and it was quite the experience. The String Cheese Incident headlined a two night show at Sunshine Daydream in Terra Alta, WV back on August 8th and 9th in 2000. For the night one encore, SCI collaborated with Michael Franti and members of Spearhead to belt out a very emotional and beautiful rendition of Marley’s Get Up Stand Up.

Download String Cheese Incident and Spearhead covering Get Up Stand Up  here.

2. Up next and instead of just one cover, here’s a full performance of Babylon By Bus from Mr. Blotto. Download it here.

3. Check out Dubmatix’s Re-Visioned version of Marley’s “Could You Be Loved”.

4. Umphrey’s Mcgee kicks off their second set with a cover of Rastaman Chant in their hometown of Chicago at The House of Blues back on April, 19th, 2001. The cover eventually builds up and segues into UM’s originals Soul Food and The Fuzz.

5. This next selection isn’t so much jammy, but it was nice to see Former Champions show some Marley love at Attitudes in Blacksburg, VA on November 5th, 2010. Download Former Champions covering “Them Belly Full” here.

6. The Bridge may no longer be around, but their sweet soundboards remain out their on archive.org including the show in their hometown of Baltimore at the 8×10 Club. Download their encore of “Small Axe” here.

7. Up-and-comers Roster McCabe does a groovy and funky version, much like Bob’s band would do, with “Could You Be Loved” intertwined with KC and The Sunshine Band’s “Thats The Way I Like It” teases. Recorded live at The Zebra Cocktail Lounge last February 24th (2011) in Bozeman, MT. Download it here.

8. The Brew plays off the crowd and venue name in a reggae chant fashion before ripping into their cover of Iron Lion Zion at Triton High School in Byfield, MA on September 10th, 2005. Download “Triton, I Meant Tryin, I meant Iron Lion Zion” here.

9. Ryan Montbleau and his band would make Marley proud is this feel good version of “One Drop” at Downtown Manhattan’s in Syracuse on July 27th, 2007. Download it here.

10. And maybe the best for last. A show you’ll hear multiple references to on Endless Boundaries Radio during this time of year of when speaking of Marley’s covers. A reggae staple on EB, check out Groundation’s Bob Marley Birthday Tribute live at the Belly Up Tavern in San Diego on February 8th, 2009. Download this fantastic soundboard here.
